4 Easy Steps to Buy a New Table

Making changes to the furniture in a room can be a daunting task. It’s easy to be intimidated and even overwhelmed with the huge number of choices out there.  Dealing with all the customers that we do, we’ve collected a lot of great info that has helped people make those tough decisions in the past.  In this post, we’ve pulled all that info together to make it easier and give you some pro tips on buying a new kitchen/dining table.

1. Measure up

First thing’s first: measure how big your table is now (if you have one). Does the size make the room small or does the room still feel empty?  Where are the doors and pathways in your room? What do you like about your room layout now? What do you not like about it? What does a normal day look like in this room? What does a holiday with family and friends look like?

There is nothing worse than a table that just doesn’t fit in a room. A minimum 2’ clearance is needed around the table to sit, and that bumps up to at least  3’ when there is a doorway or pathway next to the table.  4’ clearance or more starts creating a void in the room, but if that space is between the table and a wall, that void can be filled with an awesome buffet or sideboard.

It’s useful to think about the way things fit in your dining room  in two different views: the everyday and the Holiday.  When planning the everyday layout of your table, think about things like the easiest pathway through your kitchen/dining space, how many seats you’ll use each day, and how much you’ll use the table (is it just for meals, or is it for homework, office work, crafts, etc, as well?)  For the Holiday plan, think about the biggest group that you’ll try to host in that room.  If it’s just a matter of a couple of extra people you can simply grab the folding chairs out of the closet.  If you’re planning on hosting a bigger party, though, consider options like table leaf extensions, benches instead of chairs, or simply starting with a bigger, statement piece table that really fills up the space.

2. Pick Your Style

Pinterest is your friend here!  Oftentimes, photos of styles and ideas are much more effective ways to share your heart’s desire than trying to describe them in words.  What styles do you have in your home? What do you want to have? What colors do you have in your room? In the rest of the house? How bright/dark is your room? How busy is your room?  In this wonderful age of the internet, you can find limitless inspiration for exactly what you want.

Your furniture can act as balance to any overwhelming attributes in your home. Is your room naturally dark with dark floors and a dark shade of paint? Then a much lighter furniture piece is needed! The same balance can be achieved with contrasting styles, like a rustic table in a super-modern setting.
